How to play
How to play Tic Tac Toe
Two players, one 3×3 grid, and a race to three in a row. It is quick to learn and surprisingly tactical once both sides know to guard the center and block every threat.
- 1
Take turns on the grid
The board is a 3×3 grid of nine empty squares. X always moves first, then players alternate — X, O, X, O — placing one mark in any empty square per turn.
- 2
Line up three to win
The first player to get three of their own marks in a straight line — across a row, down a column, or along either diagonal — wins the round immediately.
- 3
A full board is a draw
If all nine squares fill up and neither player has three in a row, the round is a draw (also called a “cat’s game”). Nobody scores.
- 4
Play again instantly
Start the next round with one click — no reload. The opening move alternates between X and O each round so neither side keeps the first-move advantage.
Tips so you never lose
- Take the center square whenever it is open on your first move — it sits on four of the eight winning lines.
- If you cannot take the center, take a corner. Corners each belong to three winning lines; edges only two.
- Always block an opponent who has two in a row with an open third square — a missed block loses the round.
- Look for a fork: a single move that creates two separate threats at once, so your opponent can only stop one.
- When your opponent threatens a fork, respond by forcing them to defend a two-in-a-row instead of building your own trap.
- Against a perfect opponent the best you can get is a draw, so play to never lose rather than to always win.
FAQ
Tic Tac Toe, answered
Straight answers about Tic Tac Toe — the free X and O strategy game you can play online against the computer or a friend.
What is Tic Tac Toe?
Tic Tac Toe — also known as noughts and crosses or Xs and Os — is a two-player strategy game on a 3×3 grid. Players take turns marking empty squares, X first, and the first to line up three of their marks in a row, column, or diagonal wins. If the grid fills with no line completed, the round is a draw. tictactoegame.app is a free, modern browser version you can play against the computer or a friend.
How do you play Tic Tac Toe?
X always moves first. Players alternate turns, placing one mark in any empty square. You win the moment you complete a straight line of three of your own marks — one of the three rows, three columns, or two diagonals. If all nine squares fill without a line, it is a draw. In this build the first move alternates between X and O each round so the advantage evens out.
Is this Tic Tac Toe game free?
Yes. tictactoegame.app is completely free and runs entirely in your browser. There is nothing to buy, download, or install, there is no sign-up, and there are no ads interrupting a round.
Do I need to download or install anything?
No. The game is 100% browser-based, built with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. It loads in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, and other modern browsers on desktop and mobile without a plugin, app store listing, or installer.
Can you always win at Tic Tac Toe?
No. Tic Tac Toe is a solved game: if both players play perfectly, every round ends in a draw. You can only win when your opponent makes a mistake. The realistic goal against a strong opponent is to never lose — take the center or a corner, always block a two-in-a-row, and watch for forks.
Does the computer cheat?
No. The computer only ever places a mark in an empty square on its own turn, exactly like a human player. It uses the minimax algorithm to evaluate every possible continuation and usually picks the best move, with a small chance of a random move so it is beatable. It never sees anything you do not.
What happens when the board is full with no winner?
That is a draw, sometimes called a "cat’s game." Neither player scores, the round ends, and you can start the next one immediately. Roughly one in three random games ends this way, and nearly all games between careful players do.
Who goes first, X or O?
X goes first by the standard rule, and moving first is a genuine advantage. To keep a session fair, this game alternates the opening mark each round: X opens the first round, O opens the second, and so on.
Can I play Tic Tac Toe 2 player on one device?
Yes. Switch to 2-player mode and hand the same phone, tablet, or laptop back and forth. Both X and O are controlled by people, and an on-screen indicator shows whose turn it is. No second device, account, or internet connection is required.
Does the game save my score?
Yes. Your running tally of X wins, O wins, and draws, along with your win streak and record against the computer, are saved locally in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server and there is no login, so the scores stay on the device and browser you played on.
Can I play Tic Tac Toe on my phone?
Yes. The layout is built mobile-first: the grid and controls fit above the fold in portrait, the squares are large touch targets, and 2-player pass-and-play works well on a single phone.
